Knitting Cheat Sheet: Increases and Decreases

(Warning: Heavy knitting content.)

I knit kind of weird. The most well-known styles of knitting are “English” and “Continental”, but I knit “Combination”. I also knit ambidextrously – so instead of knitting a row then turning the work, I knit a row then knit back with the other hand.

I could go on for a while about knitting styles, but the relevant point is that most instructions for stitches don’t work very well for me. I need to pay close attention to how a stitch is seated and which leg is stitched into. (For example, telling me to ‘knit front leg’ doesn’t mean much to me, unless I also know if you expect the leading leg or the trailing leg to be in front.)

A lot of knitters I know need a reminder of which increase or decrease is which, but a quick google isn’t as helpful for me. So, this is my cheat sheet.

SSK = Slip Slip Knit = Left Slant Decrease \

Leading leg in the back of needle, knit together through the back legs.

K2Tog = Knit Two Together = Right Slant Decrease /

Reseat so leading leg is in the front needle, knit together through the front legs.

M1 = M1L = Make One Left

(Right handed) With the left needle, pickup the bar between stitches from the previous row from front to back, knit into the back (trailing) leg.

M1R = Make One Right

(Right handed) With the left needle, pickup the bar between stitches from the previous row from back to front, knit into the front (trailing) leg.

Halloween 2018

Work

I built the castle completely around the whole desk this year, enclosing my entire team. It wasn’t quite as artistic as some years, but it was peaceful.

Pumpkin

I carved my mini pumpkin this year.

Halloween 2017

Work

2017 was our first year in a new building at work, and desks. We call these ‘dog bone’ desks, because of their shape, and over Halloween the desk next to mine was empty, so I had extra space to decorate!

Obviously, I used the extra space for food.

I went with a comfy costume: Hufflepuff student.

Home

I did trick-or-treating with some friends who have kids and live in a kid-friendly neighborhood, so I left treats outside my door.

One treat bag and three glow sticks each.

DragonConRocks

I got into rock painting this year.

I found rocks, and cleaned rocks, and started painting rocks, and picked out a hash tag for my rocks (#GeekMaeRocks). I did a comparison test of different metallic paints (which I plan to post about … eventually). I bought acrylic spray sealer and found my modge podge.

And … I didn’t quite get as far as finishing any of my rocks…

I had planned to have a bunch with the #DragonConRocks tag to hide at Dragon Con this year. Now, my flight is in less than 24 hours, so I don’t really have time to finish any.

I do have a few that have the year on them, so I’m sealing those with Modge Podge real quick, and I’ll take those, the rest will have to wait until next year…

I painted with a friend, so some of these are hers and some are mine.

I started off with a different hashtag, but then I realized it was hard to fit #GeekGirlMaeRocks on a rock.

Dragon Con Swag ‘n Seek

There is this really cool group that basically enjoys giving crap away at Dragon Con.

Some people give things away in person, some hide things around the con. Some match their swag to their cosplay, some only hand out to people cosplaying as a certain character.

The swag ranges from stickers to the kind of small toys you might give to trick-or-treaters at Halloween to t-shirts to a range of hand crafted items. The variety of hand crafted items is amazing, as is the creativity and skill of some of the members.

Some swag I put up at my desk at work

The main organization of the group is through a Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/DragonConSwagNseek/). It is one of the most positive and supportive groups I’ve been a part of. There is also a hashtag for the group: #DragonConSwagNSeek .

Many people label their swag – so people know that it’s not lost or trash. And also so finders can share pictures, or learn about the group.

My problem is that I got super excited about this group, but now it’s less than a week from Dragon Con and I’m not ready! I bought stuff to hand out and I bought craft supplies, and I made lots of plans to make crafts… and I have nothing ready.

As of now, I don’t have anything put together, or labeled, or in general ready to give away. I don’t even know which boughten things I’m going to bring. (And do I have things I can hide/give away individually? Or do I put together little grab bags? What kind of bags would I use? What kind of labels should I use? How should I attach them? What should I put on the labels? How much do I have room for in my suitcase? Why am I writing this instead of getting ready for Dragon Con?)

And, because I am sometimes a little bit obsessive, here is a list of all the swag I got last year:

  • Swag n’ Seek ribbon
  • Flashy ring
  • Bubbles
  • Tinker the Pirate – bracelet
  • Pen – Miskatonic University/Arkham-Massachusetts
  • Dragoncon 2018 attendee ribbon
  • Small zipper bag
  • Noise maker
  • Plastic robot toy
  • Bead doggy
  • Dragon grog sticker
  • Shuh duh fuh cup sticker
  • Melty bead redshirt
  • Stickers
  • Temporary tatoos
  • I open at the close ribbon
  • Plastic pokemon toy
  • Ring
  • Plastic pirate gold
  • Felt black widow symbol pin
  • Hufflepuff magnet (fabric glued to magnent)
  • Felt bat sticker
  • Dragon necklace charm
  • Grape soda bottlecap pin
  • Lanyard
  • Plastic crystals
  • Pretty little cinch bag
    • Plastic dragon
    • Mariott carpet pin
    • Mariot carpet sticker
    • Mariot carpet mini frisbee
  • Ghost sucker

Rummy Bears

Dragon Con, the year before last, someone made alcoholic gummy bears. About half a year later, a friend tagged me in a post with a recipe for wine gummies. The end result was homemade alcoholic gummy bears – made with rum. Only partially because I can’t resist a pun.

Most alcoholic gummy bears are made by buying gummy bears and soaking them in alcohol. Admittedly, the result is tasty. Unfortunately, it is also slimy. Something you would eat with a spoon, or maybe slurp. Not the best for sharing.

Wine Gummies

I tried the wine gummies and I just couldn’t get them to work. I’ll admit that part if it might be that I don’t like wine that much. The main problem was I couldn’t get the right balance of texture and flavor. If I added enough gelatin to get a gummy bear like texture, then you couldn’t really taste the wine. If I added more wine, the texture would be more like jello, or a jiggler, than a gummy.

The fun thing about working with gelatin: if you don’t like the way it sets, you can melt it down again. I ended up with some really gross wine gummies, that I melted down, added rum and orange jello, and turned into pretty decent sangria gummies.

Rum Gummies

The rum gummies don’t have the same problem as the wine gummies because they don’t rely on a liquid for the flavoring, although it still took a lot of experimenting to find that balance of texture and flavor.

Recipe

  • 1 cup Rum
  • 5 Tbs Knox Gelatine
  • 2 small boxes Flavored Jello (two 3 oz pkgs, or one 6 oz pkg)
  • 1/4 tsp Citric Acid
  • 1/8 tsp Kool-Aid
  • 2 envelopes True Lemon
  • 1/2 cup corn starch
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  1. Pour rum into small sauce pan
  2. Slowly sprinkle Gelatin on the surface of the rum while stirring (to avoid lumps)
  3. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir (not the corn starch and powdered sugar)
  4. Heat over low heat, stirring occasionally, until everything is dissolved (about 15 minutes)
  5. Pour into molds
  6. Let set for several hours to overnight
  7. Mix the corn starch and powdered sugar in a small container
  8. Remove gummies from molds and toss in powdered sugar mixture
  9. Let set in a shallow open container until they reach desired consistency (about a day)
  10. Store in an airtight container – refrigerate if storing for a long time

Tips and Tricks

  • Ingredients
    • Citric Acid
      • Don’t skip it, trust me, it makes all the difference
      • Add more if you want more sour, less if you want less
      • Can be found with the canning supplies, wherever canning supplies are sold (grocery stores, Menard’s, Walmart, etc.)
    • Rum
      • I mostly use cheap rum, but the quality of the rum does affect the final taste
    • True Lemon
      • The kind that is just lemon, no other added ingredients
      • I tried lemon jello – it tastes good, but it messes with the colors (and you have to adjust the gelatin)
      • I tried lemon juice – it will work but it takes longer for the gummies to set because you are adding more liquid. I like the results better with the True Lemon
    • Kool Aid
      • First time I tried using koolaid, I used a whole packet – that was a mistake (considering it was meant to prepared with 2 quarts of water, and I was using 1 cup of liquid…)
      • Have a small container ready for the rest of the koolaid powder
      • If I can find it, I like using True Lemon brand for the flavoring – but only the kind that is just fruit
      • If you’re not opposed to artificial sweeter, there a lot more options, but it might affect the overall sweetness
    • Gelatin
      • According to my internet research, different brands of gelatin have different properties, my recipe is made with Knox – I don’t know if proportions would need adjusted for other brands
      • You will notice that my recipe measures the gelatin in tablespoons – when I started, I used the gelatin from the grocery store that comes in little envelopes, but I switched to the bulk jar I bought on the internet because it was cheaper and more convenient
      • I had trouble with the proportions when I switched from envelopes to the jar, so I won’t try to give a conversion
  • Melting
    • Keep the temperature low to avoid too much of the alcohol evaporating
    • On my stove, I use 2/10
    • You should be able to dip your finger into the liquid – it should feel hot, but not painful
    • To tell if the gelatin is completely dissolved, lift your stirring utensil out of the pan and watch the liquid flow off of it – you shouldn’t see any granules (try this near the beginning, you should be able to see the difference)
      • If you are not sure, run a clean finger over the utensil, if it feels grainy, it’s not ready yet
  • Taste
    • Because so much of the alcohol will evaporate, the final flavor will be very different from the flavor of the liquid – don’t worry if you taste the liquid and it seems way too strong
      • This is also why we start with straight rum instead of a mix of rum and
  • Fill Molds
    • Use a decorator bottle to fill the molds
    • It is easier of you let it cool for a little bit – holding the bottle should feel warm, but not hot
  • Setting Time
    • Seriously don’t stress about this
    • I’ve taken them out of the mold after a few hours, and I’ve left them in for days
    • I recommend letting them set in the mold in the fridge, then out of the mold at room temperature
    • You can cover the gummies with a cloth, but don’t cover tightly until they have reached the desired consistency
    • Think about how you will be serving the gummies when you decide if they are done – the texture is very different if they are served cold or room temperature
  • Tossing
    • I have details on how I toss my bears in my post about virgin gummy bears

Flavors

Here are the variations I ended up with.

  • Strawberry = 2 True Lemon + 1/8 t Strawberry Koolaid
  • Lime = 2 True Lemon + 3 True Lime
  • Grape = 2 True Lemon + 1/8 t Grape Koolaid
  • Orange = 1 True Lemon + 4 True Orange
  • Lemon = 5 True Lemon
  • Blue = 2 True Lemon + 1/8 t Raspberry Extract

I actually went through a lot of variations on amounts of gelatin, manner and amount of sweetening, and manner and amount of flavoring. I have a mini notebook I keep in my kitchen that I call my recipe notebook – I have all of my variations written out. There are pages of variations for the gummies.

Homemade Gummy Bears

  • 1 c Water
  • 3 T Knox Geletine
  • 1 large package of flavored Jello (or 2 small packages)
  • 1 small package of lemon Jello
  • 1/2 t Citric Acid
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Corn Starch
  1. Pour water into a small saucepan. Slowly add gelatin water – sprinkle gelatin on the top of the water while gently stirring. The point is to prevent the gelatin from clumping.
  2. Let the pan sit for about five minutes.
  3. Add all the Jello and the citric acid and stir. The mixture will be thick – more gel-like than liquid.
  4. Put on very low heat. On my stove, I use level 3 out of 10. Stir occasionally until the gelatin is dissolved completely. This will take a while.
  5. Pour the mixture into small silicon molds.
  6. Let the gummies set in the fridge overnight.
  7. Remove the gummies from the molds and toss in a mixture of equal parts powdered sugar and corn starch.
  8. Let the gummies set for another day in shallow, open container in the fridge.
  9. Store in the fridge in an airtight container. Can be served or stored for short periods at room temperature.

Tips and Tricks

Citric Acid – Don’t skip this, trust me, it makes a huge difference. You can find it with canning supplies in any grocery stores, and a little goes a long way, so one container will last you a long time.

Molds – You can buy silicon gummy bear molds, or use any shape small silicon molds. I wouldn’t use a shape with larger dimensions than a Reece’s cup, or else it will be hard to get the texture right. I have tried using plastic molds designed for candy, but it was a pain to remove the gummies. It would probably be easier if I sprayed it with cooking spray first, but the silicon molds are so much easier.

Pouring the Gummies – If you have to, you can pour the mixture by hand; I’d recommend putting it in something with a pour spout instead of trying to pour straight from the pan. Most gummy bear molds I’ve seen come with little droppers; these are much better than pouring for tiny shapes, but there is still a better option. Use a plastic decorator or condiment bottle. I’ve found them at dollar stores before.

Setting Time – You can remove them from the molds after about an hour if you have to, and another hour setting out of the molds. You are fine letting either of the setting stages last a few days.

Tossing the Gummies – I mix a quarter cup each of powdered sugar and corn starch and use it for several batches of gummies. I dip the first few gummies in the sugar, then put them in a tall glass. I cover the top of the glass with my hand and shake. I add a few gummies at a time and shake. If the sugar gets too sparse, I dip a couple more in the sugar before adding to the cup.

Ace Fic Rec

I don’t really talk much about being asexual, mainly because it is such a non-issue in my life. But, I read a lot of fanfiction (like, a lot), and I really like reading ace fic. (And a lot of other kinds of fics.)

I read the first fic below, and I thought it was the best ace fic I’ve read. There are so many stories out there that are full of asexual angst: mostly the person is convinced they are broken until they find the ‘asexual’ label (and their tru wuv). Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy reading those fics, but even if I identify with certain aspects of the character, the angst just never resonates with my experience.

This Tony still doesn’t feel exactly the way I feel, but I love the way sexuality is approached here with humor. I love Tony’s disbelief and the way there is no huge earth-shattering, life-changing revelation.

The second fic is just as good, if not better. Where the first fic is short and sweet and mostly humor, the second is longer and much deeper. I love the story itself: the plot, the characters, the relationships. But in there is some great discussions about different types of attraction and different types of relationships (the big one is in chapter 16). In this chapter, Tony gets a bunch of the other characters together to try to help him understand different kinds of attraction. There’s a point in that conversation when Tony says “I’ve made more progress in the last fifteen minutes [of conversation] than I have in the six hours of research that I did yesterday”.

That echos a truth, that conversation, analogies, and stories speak to us in a way simple definitions and descriptions don’t.

(Did I mention that I figured out that I’m aromantic? It’s a label I’ve been playing around with for a while now, but this fic helped me settle it.)

This… no, sexual attraction was invented by capitalism and patriarchy to exploit women and make money,” he says, flapping his hands around.

Steve pats his shoulder, “Tony no, sexual attraction was not invented by capitalism,” he says, laughing at Tony’s confusion.

“Hello?” the voice on the other end says. Tony stares at it for a second in shock, “hello?” the person asks again.

“Uh, not gunna lie, I wasn’t expecting to get this far,” Tony says.

How to Remove Command Strips

TL;DR: Use dental floss to remove command strips, by ‘flossing’ between the two bonded objects.

Now here’s something that’s really useful.

Command strips are supposed to be easy to remove – just pull down on the tab and the strip will stretch and come away. But, if you use a lot of command strips – you know this isn’t always the case. Especially if the strips are old or have been on the wall for a long time.

Sometimes, you start pulling on the tab, and it breaks. This used to be a disaster for me – I would pull really slowly, and adjust my grip so I’m holding it closer to the wall. And if it breaks anyway, I would get out a needle nose pliers to grip whatever bits of the strip was still accessible. And sometimes I would still be stuck trying to gently pry off the rest of the hook and inevitably end up pulling up a chip of paint.

It turns out, I was doing it wrong. There’s an easy way to remove stuck command strips: floss! Just get ordinary dental floss and floss behind your command hook (or whatever else you command stripped to the wall). It will cut the strip in half, and part of it will be stuck to the hook and part to the wall. The remnants are easy to scrape off – especially if you can get a grip on a corner and stretch it.

img_8020

When I decorated my door for Christmas, I used a lot command hooks. When I removed the hooks, there were a bunch of strips that I had to use the floss trick on, and I think it actually took less time to use the floss than to remove them properly. (That includes removing the hooks and the residue from the door, but not the residue from the hooks. That part isn’t hard, just a little tedious.)
